Summary: This paper presents a comparative analysis based on two independent studies
of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) education and research in Brazil. The first
study was conducted to understand how HCI has been taught in Brazil, via a
survey responded by 114 educators and researchers in the country. The second
study analyzed the scientific production of HCI in Brazil from a fifteen-year
analysis of full papers published on the Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors
in Computing Systems (IHC). Our analysis is based on data-driven visual
exploration, and it can help to get insights from the data and to identify how
HCI research in Brazil relates to our education programs. We believe this kind
of analysis can shed some light in the evolution of HCI in other countries.

Summary: Nowadays it is notorious the growth and the popularity of social networks
such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter, especially with the facilities provided
by the use of mobile devices. Considering these social networks, Twitter has a
different approach: a friendship connection doesn't need to exist and a person
can follow another person or organization just to receive its tweets. So, this
social network is often used as a way to get general or specific news and to
express (dis)satisfaction about products, politics, organizations, etc.
Considering this, the need for organizations to monitor what people are
"saying" about them has arisen. Thus, the main goal of this work is to
understand how information visualization techniques can support and improve the
analysis of the perceived image of organizations on social networks. For this,
we developed an application prototype to support sentiment analyses on Twitter
and we conducted a study on how this prototype, called MentionStats, can
contribute to the company's image analysis on Twitter. This study consisted on
interviews with professionals about their perceptions of the MentionStats and
its visualizations. Our main contribution are the presented possibilities of
using information visualization techniques in order to help users to deepen the
analysis of their organizations image on social networks, and also users'
impressions about this.

Summary: The relation between HCI Education and the Industry needs is a challenge to
the HCI community. HCI professors should be aware of their role to persuade
students that user experience and experience design are cross-cutting concepts,
which therefore influence all other areas involved in innovative product and
service development, from conceptual design to implementation and testing. In
this paper we present a revised HCI Brazilian syllabus for undergraduate
Computer Science courses, discussing HCI requirements for UX professional and
academic formation of the students. We also describe some research questions
that have been raised in this context.

Summary: Designing documents with folds is a difficult task with current desktop
publishing software, and this subject is also hardly explored in the academic
literature. Because the flat nature of the screen, document design is limited
to a two dimensional space, demanding extra effort from designers to place the
art with respect to the folds, sometimes forcing them to resort to paper
prototyping. Results from interviews performed with design experts, helped us
to understand the challenges and needs faced by them during the document
creations. This paper presents an interactive visualization approach to compose
foldable documents and to interact with the results without resorting to
external means. We consider that a foldable document such as brochure is
composed by panels joined at the edges and the content of each panel is
designed separately. We describe our interactive approach and the results
generated by a prototype we developed to support the composition of foldable
documents.

Summary: With the rise of different interaction modalities, several different devices
are available to users that need to learn how to interact with them. To avoid
problems in the future, developers need to create intuitive interaction
techniques, which is not a trivial task. To support the design of these
techniques, we present a process where users interactively and iteratively
participate in the design, through a series of individual interviews and focus
groups. We also present two case studies, for a multimodal and a multi-touch
application.

Summary: This article fits in a broader context of a qualitative research seeking for
traces or signs of expression, presence and representation of the self from the
perspective of teachers as end-user developers of virtual learning environment
interfaces. We chose Moodle as the environment to conduct this work and we
counted with the voluntary participation of nine teachers with different
profiles concerning the area, educational model and target audience.
Questionnaire and interview were applied and testimonies were collected,
uncovering three ways of self-expression and representation: expression through
written language, interface customization and through the content. We focus
this paper on the communication practiced via Moodle by means of written
language.

Summary: The increasing dissemination of mobile devices has turned everybody into
potential users of mobile applications. Due to the presumed ease of use of
these applications along with the uncommon use of their help systems, most do
not offer help systems within the applications and those that do are usually
accessible only through Internet links. This double presumption that users do
not need help because the application is easy to use and users have access to
Internet everywhere -- may negatively affect not only the use of the
application in some (or various) situations, but even worse may cause users' to
misunderstand their goals and possibilities. To explore this topic, we present
a user study of 14 users about mobile applications and their (lack of) help
systems.

Summary: Social network sites (SNS) are powerful technologies to bring people
together and share information, changing the way society interacts in
contemporary days. SNS such as Facebook have grown in popularity in recent
years, reaching 1,3 billion monthly active users. However, as this network
helps to make the world more open and connected, participants inevitably end up
losing control over the extent that their personal information may reach among
people that belong to their social circle or not. In this context we present
+PrivacyCTRL, a model to enhance privacy controls on SNS, which supports the
design of privacy settings in order to give users more autonomy over what they
publish in these networks. +PrivacyCTRL was applied -- via paper prototype
technique -- to three well-known SNS and showed promise in clarifying the
privacy settings and improving the user's choice about what to reveal and to
whom.

Summary: One of the issues the Brazilian HCI community has paid great attention to is
HCI education in the country. One of the efforts has been to understand,
through the use of surveys, how HCI has been taught in Brazil. So far, two
reports on HCI education profile in Brazil have been presented: one from 2009
that described HCI courses being taught, and another from 2012 that was in
response to a SIGCHI demand and targeted a broader audience, not taking into
account specificities of the Brazilian context. Therefore, the need for an
updated analysis of HCI education in Brazil was identified and a new survey
applied. In this paper we present the initial analysis of the results of this
survey and delineate what HCI courses have been offered at undergraduate or
graduate levels around the country and their topics they cover.

Summary: The low cost and ubiquitousness of digital cameras allow users to collect
large amounts of photos. Although storage is not usually a problem, selection
of content for presentation requires time and work. Thus, we intend to
investigate how users currently deal with the tasks of organizing and
presenting their photos. A survey was conducted with 100 participants pointing
out their preferences and differences related to age and gender in this
subject. The research methodology, the experiment and the statistical results
are discussed in this paper.

Summary: In attempt to help users in filtering available products, recommender
systems are being used by e-commerce systems to try to predict users'
preferences and suggest them new products. Some recommender systems are based
in previous ratings and evaluations provided by users to purchased items. When
new users or new items join in recommender systems they can suffer by the so
called cold-start problem. However, do you rate the products that you bought?
This question and other ones were made to 367 participants by an online survey
that aims to identify customer profiles and motivations. Also, we investigated
user engagement in gamified systems and the effects of tangible and intangible
rewards in their behavior. This work presents a theoretical framework that
provides basis for defining how gamification can be used to encourage ratings
and improve user engagement in tasks that benefit user reputation, item
reliability and to overcome cold-start problem.

Summary: The integration between agile methods and UCD has been addressed by several
authors in recent years. However, a gap remains regarding how the practices
have been described, lacking a standard that both designers and agile
practitioners can understand and apply.
This study aims to propose agile usability patterns based on the literature,
with a focus on the User-Centered Design early stages. The goal of the proposed
patterns is to facilitate the use of the best agile usability practices by
identifying more clearly in which context the pattern can be applied, and what
is the problem that each pattern solves, presenting examples.

Summary: The highly dynamic nature of domain ontologies has a direct impact on
semantic mappings established between concepts from different ontologies.
Mappings must therefore be maintained according to ongoing ontology changes.
Since many software applications exploit mappings for managing information and
knowledge, it is important to define appropriate adaptation strategies to apply
to existing mappings in order to keep their validity over time. In this
article, we propose a set of mapping adaptation actions and present how they
are used to maintain mappings up-to-date based on ontology change operations of
different nature. We conduct an experimental evaluation using life sciences
ontologies and mappings. We measure the evolution of mappings based on the
proposed approach to mapping adaptation. The results confirm that mappings must
be individually adapted according to the different types of ontology change.

Summary: Help systems allow users to understand the system they need to use and how
to best achieve their goals. In this context, strategic information is
fundamental. At the same time this kind of information is very hard to find. We
present a case study, with the analysis of the users conversations in a peer
help system, in order to discuss how this strategic information is demanded by
them. It was possible to verify the importance of this information, how hard it
is to describe it, and to discuss some alternatives in this regard.

Summary: The goal of this paper is to compare the performance of two usability
inspection methods that aim at anticipating the evaluation process by
inspecting Activity Diagrams. In order to achieve this goal, we carried out a
feasibility study by following an established inspection process. According to
quantitative results, the Usability Guidelines method outperformed the MIT 3
with regards to efficacy and had similar performance regarding efficiency.
However, through a qualitative analysis, the MIT 3 was considered easier to
remember and to learn and also more useful than the Usability Guidelines. We
found out that the Usability Guidelines method could be used for more
experienced professionals on usability issues and perhaps has an even better
performance. Notwithstanding, the MIT 3 method could be suggested for the use
by a little less experienced professionals with regards to usability issues,
supporting the formation and training of design and development teams.

Summary: Many applications such as Foursquase, Stackoverflow and Livemocha are using
gamification to try keep users motivated to perform tasks that require the
users collaboration and to increase data collection from users feedback. The
term gamification refers to the use of game elements on systems and researchers
from human-computer interaction (HCI) area have recently started studies to
explore its effects on user experiences. In this paper we report the results
from a survey performed with 368 participants about the use of gamification,
their motivation and perception about it. The results show that users are not
aware from some game elements and they have distinct motivation and knowledge
about gamification.

Summary: HCI Education in Brazil has come a long way. Since 1999, the Brazilian
Computer Society (SBC) included HCI in its reference curriculum for its
Computing courses. Since then, the community has discussed the perspective of
the area in our country. From 2010 to this day, we have held a series of
workshops on HCI Education, called WEIHC, as a permanent discussion forum
within the Brazilian HCI conference, IHC. We report here the results of the
WEIHC discussions and of two surveys, conducted in 2009 and in 2012, to help us
assess the status of HCI Education in Brazil. Despite the advances of the
Brazilian HCI community, our surveys show that we still face some important
challenges. We should curate existing teaching material to further enhance
collaboration among professors, to increase the quality of our courses, and to
broaden HCI awareness across all related departments.

Summary: The low cost and ubiquitousness of digital cameras allow ever larger
collections of photos. Although storage is not usually a problem, selection for
presentation requires time and effort. Studies show the existence of user
groups that never tried to create digital photo albums or were discouraged by
the difficulty of this task. Trying to minimize the effort to create albums, we
developed a prototype called Twingle. Using Twingle the creation of an album
requires dragging pictures into a page and the program is responsible for
positioning and resizing. To investigate whether such an automatic layout
generation could be an alternative to users, we made a study exploring Twingle
with users from several ages and professional areas. The related works, the
performed user study and its results are discussed here.

Summary: User-Centered Design spends a considerable effort on research and analysis
before development begins. On the other hand, Agile methods strive to deliver
small sets of software features to customers as fast as possible in short
iterations. Whereas the two methodologies have tensions regarding requirements
gathering and upfront design, they also share similarities. For instance, both
approaches are iterative and customer focused. However, there is little
guidance on how to integrate these two perspectives and a lack of understanding
with respect to the User Experience (UX) Designer's role in an agile
environment. Based on four ethnographically-informed studies in two large
companies, we aim at providing a better understanding of the integration of
Agile development and UX Design by describing the different roles that a UX
Designer plays within an Agile environment.

Summary: Social networking websites have been taking a huge space on the Internet.
With millions of members spread across the world, these services connect their
users through "friendship" relations, and within a short period of time the
information is disseminated in the network. Considering Twitter, we
investigated how standard techniques of information visualization can improve
the analysis of its users' behavior, i.e. the group of people who most closely
relate, and the frequency and type of messages they send. This investigation
was done through user's studies with a set of visualization techniques
implemented in an interactive system prototype.

Summary: Social networking sites are powerful virtual technologies to bring people
together and exchange information, enabling their users to post messages,
videos and photos, make comments, "mark" people in publications and share with
others, among other features. Networks like Facebook are growing in popularity
in recent years, reaching 901 million monthly active users. However, as this
network helps to make the world more open and connected, participants
inevitably end up losing control over the extent that their personal
information can reach among people who are or not part of their social
connection. In this context, we conducted a survey to find out how people have
considered the issue of privacy on these networks, and if they are aware or
care about the risks that the exposure of information online can bring. This
research was focused on Facebook, with the participation of 255 volunteers, and
its results and considerations are discussed in this article.
